Default How much weight have you lost???

Hi I am anxiously awaiting my surgery and would really like to know what is a realistic weight loss goal for a 6-8 month time period. I was supposed to be done with all my requirements at the end of October, but I just got a call from the sleep study center and they want to do another sleep study with that stupid machine. Sadly, they can't get me in until towards the end of November which of course is now screwing with my surgery date. At the rate I am going, I won't have the surgery until January. My brother is getting married next summer and I really want to go, however I refuse to go looking the way I do. I have not seen my family, other then my mom and my brother, in over 10 years and I was thin back then. Anyway, say I have my surgery Jan what is a realistic amount of weight I can lose by July? Thanks in advance for your input.

Don't worry if u have your surgery in january you will look great by the summer. I am now 4 mths postop and have lost 43 pounds!!! What a great feeling when people tell you how great you look!!! I actually had to roll the waist of my jeans down to hold them up instead of lying in bed trying to pull the zipper up. I have another 37 pounds to my goal weight of 160, i'm 5'8" so i think that is a realistic weight. Good luck to you and your surgery will be here in no time. I know the anxiuos feeling, i had to wait 6 mths till i finally had mine!!! Hang in there....irish

Hmmm... I was at goal (20BMI) when I revised from a band to sleeve so I can't give you realistic specifics but what I can tell you is that bandsters typically lose 1-2# weekly, sleevesters typically lose 2-3# weekly. Hang in there, it will happen.

In my Post-op bible, it says expect 10-20 lb. the first month and 5-10 lb. after that.

I've also seen at lot of people do 50% excess weight at the 6 month mark and goal at around 1 year. But a lot of this depends on how much you have to lose. Plus some lose faster and some lose slower than that. I've seen lightweights (BMI 40 or less) get to goal in 6 months.

You have about 2-3 months before surgery, you can get a head start and that will help. For example, I was at 30% EWL at day of surgery (that took 7 months though) so it probably won't take me 6 months to get to 50%. It will probably be more like 2-3 months for me.

OTOH, are you really doing to miss your brother's wedding because you don't want a bunch of people you never see to see you at less than your absolute best? Family is important; what relative strangers think of us is not.

I agree family is very important but I know I would not be able to enjoy myself or be at ease back home being overweight, let only obese. My brother is a personal trainer, was a professional athlete, lean and in shape and it was hard enough when I was younger and not overweight, but to go back home after all these years and be overweight, I couldn't do it. I don't want to embarass him or my family so I will do all that I can to lose the weight and hopefully it will be enough. Thanks for taking the time to respond and your advice, it is very much appreciated. As you can probably tell, I am going to need alot of support during this journey.

Have they said they'll be embarrassed? I think we all worry too much about this stuff. It sucks to be fat in today's society where you constantly get the subtle (and not so subtle) putdowns and you are constantly "failing" at dieting. But our family is supposed to love us for whom we are and most of the time they do. :smile2:

MacMadame,

You mentioned post op bible earlier on. Is that online? Is there anyway to get one. The one super lame thing about my surgery is that the dietitian gave my a bypass booklet and told me to follow it but don't worry about sugar free items because you don't dump.

Basically it says clear liquids week one, full liquids week two, puree week three and soft until week eleven. The soft part rings a little off for me. Advice or a link to that post op bible would be great.

It's something my surgeon gives us. They don't put it online because it's considered to be one of the things we pay for and they don't want people who didn't pay to get it.

I can link you to two sleeve diets online though. They are both from programs at medical schools so they don't care who gets them. :smile2:

This is definitely an area that all surgeons do differently. But I would be skeptical of any program that let you have anything thicker than liquids before 2 weeks out. That's the big timeline for letting your staple line heal. Most programs have you on liquids of some sort for at least two weeks. After that, they diverge quite a bit.
